Understanding Chiropractic Care!
For a long time, many people thought chiropractors only helped patients with bad backs. What they didn't realize was that the nerves traveling down the spinal column go to every organ and cell in the entire body. Chiropractic care emphasizes the natural inherent recuperative ability of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic is the most popular natural healthcare in the United States. Chiropractors are experts in the care of bones, nerves, muscles, joints, and ligaments. All of these elements work together as one unit to make up who we are. When we hurt, our body does not function like a well-oiled machine - as a result we compensate by limping and causing other areas to hurt. What truly differentiates doctors of chiropractic from any other healthcare professionals is the fact that chiropractors are the only professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat what are called spinal subluxations. The word “subluxation” comes from the Latin words meaning “somewhat or slight" (sub) and “to dislocate” (luxate). So the term ‘vertebral subluxation’ literally means a slight dislocation or misalignment of the bones in the spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting subluxations. When a subluxation occurs, a chiropractor can correct the misaligned bone and allow it to return to its proper position. This procedure is appropriately called an adjustment, and the adjustment enables the body to heal. The chiropractic adjustment is a quick thrust applied to a vertebra for the purpose of correcting its position, movement or both. Adjustments are often accompanied by an audible release of gas that sounds like a “crack.” The sound sometimes shocks people a little bit the first couple times they get adjusted, but the sensation is usually relieving. Occasionally, minor discomfort is experienced, especially if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the patient tenses up during the chiropractic procedure. There are times when the audible “cracking” does not occur. This is often due to either significant muscle tightness or that the patient may be having a hard time relaxing during their adjustments. However, the chiropractic adjustment is still important. The leak is fixed. The wiring is fixed. Information is flowing again. To keep the wiring fixed, several adjustments over a course of time may be necessary, in addition to massage, physical therapy, stretching exercises, or strengthening exercises. In the chiropractic world, keeping the problem fixed and preventing its reoccurrence is just as important as the initial treatment. To be healthy it is essential that your nervous system function properly and free from any interference caused by subluxations. Your nervous system controls and coordinates every function of your body. It is your nervous system that allows you to adapt to, and live in your environment. A large portion of your nervous system passes through your spine. It is your spinal cord that acts as the major cable exiting your brain, travels down inside your spinal column and branches off into spinal nerves at various levels of your spine. These spinal nerves then exit between individual spinal vertebrae and go to the various parts of your body. Subluxations can cause interference to the nervous system at any point along the spine where the nerves exit. This can adversely affect the function of various parts of your body, and ultimately your health. Ultimately, the goal of receiving adjustments should be to restore the body to its natural state of optimal health. In order to accomplish this, chiropractors can use and recommend a variety of natural healing methods, including adjustments, massage, trigger point therapy, nutrition, exercise rehabilitation, and counseling on lifestyle issues that impact your health. The primary focus is simply to remove those things which interfere with the body’s natural normal healing ability. The adjustment of the spine is the primary objective of a chiropractor. There are some chiropractors who also adjust the extremities and use other forms of physiological therapeutics including the use of electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction, neuromuscular re-education, and a variety of manual therapies. Increasingly, chiropractors’ offices are becoming full service wellness centers providing a variety of wellness services. Studies indicate that people who are under regular chiropractic care have fewer illnesses, use less medication, needless medical intervention, and have a better quality of life. One study also concluded that there is no ceiling or plateau regarding your health potential while under chiropractic care. No matter whether you have been involved in an auto accident, a work injury, have headaches, back pain, asthma, or any other common ailment, chiropractic can help. |

The Consultation
The main goal of the first visit is to verify they can help you relieve and or correct the condition you presently are experiencing. Dr. Leger will take the time to brief you about the different services they provide. He will also explain the principles behind the treatment. This is your chance to ask questions and clarify your doubts about the treatment. As professionals, chiropractors will not perform any treatment, unless you are absolutely sure about going through the procedure. |
|
 |
Patient History
In preparation for your consultation with the chiropractor, you will be asked to provide background information about your symptoms and condition. Types of questions the chiropractor might ask include: When did the pain start? Where is it located? Is it a result of an injury? What makes it better? What makes it worse? Past procedures?
|
|
 |
Examination
Once the history has been completed, Doctor Leger will perform a thorough chiropractic examination. In addition to general tests such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and reflexes, the chiropractic examination will include specific orthopedic and neurological tests to assess: Range of motion of the affected part, Muscle tone, Muscle strength, Neurological integrity, X-rays (if needed) |
|
 |
Treatment
Patients will generally be provided with their first treatment at the conclusion of the appointment. This may include spinal adjustments, physical therapies, and/or soft tissue therapies. Treatment is interactive with you so you can express any concerns you have about the style of adjustment you will be most comfortable with. Only minor discomfort should be felt during the treatment procedure. |

Your Second Visit - Report of Findings
On the second visit, which is usually the day following your first visit, you will receive a report of findings from your examination. For acute cases this can be done on the same day.
If x-rays were taken, we will review your x-rays and explain the findings to you. In most cases an anatomical models of the will be used to ensure your comprehension of the findings.
Each patient will have choices regarding treatment. Usually there are many ways to treat various conditions. We will then tell you the amount of improvement you can expect in your condition, as well as how long it will likely take to achieve meaningful results. You will be given an individualized treatment schedule and a re-exam date where we can determine your progress. The treatment will start immediately according to your treatment plan and goals established. Each part of your treatment will be through explained BEFORE performed.
Treatments are usually broken in several sessions. You may have to undergo a series of treatments to fully get the benefits of chiropractic treatment.

Follow-Up Treatments
As we say,” there is good treatment, better treatment, and there’s The Back to Health Treatment. Each visit at our office is usually pre-scheduled around your busy schedule. Each visit will last between 20 to 40 minutes according to each specific condition.
Most patients will arrive at the office proceed in to see Doctor Leger immediately. After the inial treatment is complete, some patients will be recommended physical therapy (if needed). Other patients will get a therapeutic massage before or after seeing the doctor. The treatment of Dr. Leger is very unique. It is blend of straight and diversified methods of chiropractic, various muscle functional protocols, and home exercise.
Regular chiropractic adjustments are the quickest and most effective way to reduce stress to your nerve system. Spinal nerve stress, caused by a vertebral subluxation, is a dangerous mechanism that damages nerves, weakens health and depletes energy stores. Many people may walk around with a painless subluxation for years without knowing it. Doctors of chiropractic are professionals who specialize in correcting vertebral subluxations, the cause of spinal nerve stress, which leads to increased energy, improved health and a rejuvenated body

Maintaining a Healthy & Well-Aligned Spine!
It may be obvious that you need to see a Chiropractor if you are experiencing neck pain, back pain, hip pain, headaches, numbness or curvature of the spine. However, many people don't realize that chiropractic care has an excellent record of success helping many health conditions. Maintaining a healthy and well-aligned spine is extremely important and is the most often overlooked key to staying healthy. "Simply put, diseases and pain are caused by interruption in the nerve flow due to misalignment of the spine or "subluxation", a body can heal itself when the spine's alignment is corrected. It isn't unusual for someone to seek chiropractic care for a back injury and once being adjusted realizes that other health problems they've had for ages have improved or completely gone away", says Dr. Leger.
Keep in mind that chiropractic doesn't claim to cure anything but helps to restore health to your body allowing it to heal itself. The conditions listed below are some of the common health problems that patients have seen improve under chiropractic care. |

What you should do between chiropractic visits
1. Sit up straight. Sitting up straight give you a lot of relief from the pressures on the spine from gravity. Every time you lean forward from poor posture, there is an exponential increase of force on the joints in your neck or back. Try to keep your spine in a neutral posture.
2. Eat Your Vegetables. A proper diet throughout the day will bring the necessary nutrients to the cells in your body, including and especially the soft tissues surrounding the spine. This is very important during the stress of back pain, or from the healing process from a fresh injury.
3. Turn off the TV. Dr. Leger tells us to get out of the house and keep active. When you move, you involve the balance of your whole nervous system, and you exercise every cell in your body. This is also important for the muscles surrounding the spine. You want the spinal muscles to contract in response to their environment in gravity. This happens best in between visits while participating in life.
4. Put that down. You’ve got to watch how you lift things. When you pick up something heavy, make sure you don’t twist your spine and bend your knees. When you twist the spine, you shut off 1/2 of your spinal muscles, creating a huge liability for the other 1/2.
5. Go to sleep. Get plenty of rest to allow your body to recharge. Make sure you are resting on a supportive mattress that is not too soft and not too firm. Don’t sleep in a position that puts your neck in a bad position.
You want to get the most from your chiropractic visits, you should do your part to allow your boby to do it's part.

How Can Chiropractic Benefit The Whole Family?
• Chiropractic care provides a holistic approach to optimal health and wellbeing for both adults and children.
• Infants. From the time a child is born he/she is subject to numerous physical stresses – the first one being the birth process itself! These stresses often cause small misalignments of the spinal bones; this is what we call a subluxation. Subluxations put pressure on the central nerve system and interfere with normal function and the natural healing processes of the body. How long do you want your child to have pressure on its nerves? We believe in removing this interference as soon as possible – not waiting until symptoms appear
• Children’s bodies can be placed out of balance and alignment by everyday activities. Kids spend their days running and tumbling, and carrying those heavy backpacks for school.
• Adults, regardless of their activity level, can benefit from chiropractic care to keep the body healthy and functioning at an optimal level.
• Mothers and Moms-to-be can greatly benefit from chiropractic care throughout pregnancy, because it helps the body adjust to the many structural changes it goes through until the birthing process, which can also be physically taxing for both Mother and baby.
• After birth, the constant lifting, twisting and nursing — basically, just being a Mom — can have quite an impact on the body as well.
• The effects of this constant lifting and playing impacts Dads, too.
